Bringing Solar Power Closer to Off-Grid Rural Communities in Ghana
WindiSun Energy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, is delivering the Solar Home Systems Distribution Programme (SHSDP) — powering homes, supporting public institutions, and creating opportunities beyond the grid.
Powering homes. Supporting public institutions. Creating opportunities beyond the grid.
For many families living in rural communities, electricity is more than just a convenience. It can mean so much: being able to study after sunset, listen to the news, charge a phone, keep a fan running on a hot evening, or simply have dependable light at home.
For a teacher, health worker, community leader or public servant working in an area without reliable electricity, access to power can also make a meaningful difference in how they work and serve their communities.
This is why expanding access to reliable and sustainable electricity matters.
Through its collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, WindiSun Energy is supporting Ghana’s efforts to bring solar power to communities and public institutions that remain beyond the reach of conventional electricity infrastructure.
The initiative forms part of the Solar Home Systems Distribution Programme (SHSDP) and is designed to bring practical, affordable solar energy solutions directly to people who need them most.
A Solar System Designed Around Everyday Needs
At the heart of the programme is a solar home system designed to provide essential electricity for everyday household activities. Each household system includes:
- TV
- Radio
- 4 LED light bulbs
- Fan
- 2 fluorescent lights
- Flashlight
- 80W solar panel
- Battery unit
Rather than simply putting a solar panel on a roof, the system is designed as a complete package that can support some of the basic electrical needs of a household.
And importantly, the programme is structured to make the technology more accessible to participating households, with the Government covering 70% of the cost. That support can make a significant difference for families who may otherwise find it difficult to afford a solar system on their own.

Supporting Rural Government Institutions Too
The programme is not only about homes. Rural government institutions also need dependable electricity to operate effectively and serve the people who depend on them.
As part of the initiative, 3kW solar systems will be deployed to participating government institutions, providing clean and reliable electricity without the institutions having to bear the cost of the systems. This can help create better working environments and support the delivery of public services in communities where access to electricity remains a challenge.
Reaching Communities Across Ghana
The scale of the programme is significant. The project is expected to cover 8 regions and 73 districts, with over 5,000 solar systems planned for deployment.

For WindiSun Energy, these numbers represent more than installations. They represent thousands of individual households, workers and communities that can gain access to a cleaner and more dependable source of electricity.
Behind every system installed is a home that can have light after dark, a child who can study in the evening, a family that can access basic entertainment and communication, or an institution that can operate with greater access to power.
More Than Solar Installation
At WindiSun Energy, we believe that solar energy is not simply about panels, batteries and electrical connections. It is about what the system brings:
- Helping families feel more connected.
- Giving people greater control over their energy.
- Supporting institutions that serve their communities.
And it is about ensuring that where the national grid cannot yet reach, access to electricity does not necessarily have to stop.
Ghana’s Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has also emphasised the importance of reliable and sustainable energy access for homes, businesses and communities as part of the country’s broader energy development agenda.
Working Together for a More Inclusive Energy Future
The SHSDP initiative demonstrates what can happen when government and private-sector expertise come together around a shared goal. Through its partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, WindiSun Energy is bringing its experience in solar technology, system deployment and renewable-energy solutions to support the programme.
Our role goes beyond delivering equipment. It is about helping ensure that the right systems reach the right communities and that people can benefit from practical renewable-energy solutions.
As the deployment continues, WindiSun Energy remains committed to contributing to a future where access to clean and reliable electricity is not determined by whether someone lives in a major city or a remote rural community.

Powering Progress, One Community at a Time
The journey toward universal and sustainable energy access is a collective one. With every solar home system installed and every rural institution powered, we move one step closer to a Ghana where more people can live, work, learn and grow with access to reliable electricity.
At WindiSun Energy, we are proud to be part of that journey.
